Hide.me Review

Hide.me, formerly Hide.io is a new VPN service provider, and is certainly trying to earn a name by offering some pretty exciting VPN features and services. Hide.me is a Hong Kong based company and one of the best things about them is the free VPN service option. Along with this free option, Hide.me offers full P2P file sharing capabilities and complete online anonymity.

Installation & Configuration

Hide.me offers manual VPN connectivity for all operating systems, but offers a dedicated OpenVPN dialer for Windows upon request. The OpenVPN protocol is easy to install and use, but there are different VPN protocols for a manual connection that includes PPTP, L2TP, IPSec, Cisco IPSec, or IKEv2, which will bring the best result.

Subscription Cost

The free VPN package allows the user up to 2 GB of data transfer every month and moderate download speeds. There are absolutely no frills with this account, but you do get basic VPN features in return for nothing. There are limitations such as VPN access for only one device, access only to manual PPTP, L2TP and IPSec protocols and availability of only Netherlands and Romanian servers.

Pay $5.42 for the Plus account, and you can increase the bandwidth to 75 GB, along with unlimited speeds and access to all the servers as well as protocols. If this account doesn’t make sense to you, you can also choose the Premium account, which will cost a whopping $11.66 per month. The Premium account does come with all the bells and whistles, and you are entitled to unlimited bandwidth. You can also use VPN on up to 5 devices for the premium VPN account.

By any means, Hide.IO is expensive, but you can get up to 45% discount if you choose a long term plan, and this would be the most appropriate package for all users, considering the cost aspect and the VPN services offered in return. When it comes to the payment options, a user can pay using credit cards, bank wire transfer, PayPal, CashU, UKash, PaySafeCard or PaymentWall.

Users can enjoy a 3 days money-back guarantee, provided they don’t use more than 50MB bandwidth. We believe the money-back duration and bandwidth restriction may be increased in light of users needing more bandwidth to check streaming capabilities over time.

Speed, Reliability & Bandwidth

We did enjoy great speeds from Hide.me, and streaming was never a problem. We can’t say the same for reliability, as we did face a few minor downtimes. The best browsing speeds are available from German servers.

You can enjoy unlimited bandwidth for the premium plan, but we do know of several low-cost VPN service providers who offer unlimited bandwidth for lesser monthly subscription costs. This is a drawback for Hide.me.

Servers & Server Locations

Hide.me has installed servers in 11 different countries, but has only a handful of servers (28 to be precise) to accommodate their users. While they do have excellent speeds, bandwidth is going to be an issue, especially due to the fact that users are allowed to share files using P2P.

Hide.me has servers in Canada, Iceland, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Morocco, Netherlands, Romania, Singapore, Switzerland, The United Kingdom and The United States. The entire list of major server locations are covered by Hide.me for both online anonymity as well as viewing blocked geo-specific content.

Data Logging Policies & Online Anonymity

Hide.me does not log any data and does not keep track of user activity. Hide.me follows a strict privacy policy, and this is also evident from the fact that Hide.io offers P2P file sharing option for the user. At Hide.me, you can enjoy complete online anonymity.

Customer Support

Customer support is not really great to be honest, as the only communication channel is email or website ticket submission form. You can’t find any phone number or any live chat function, which is not something that we expect from a company that charges a high premium for the VPN services rendered.

Issues & problems

There are issues and minor problems at Hide.me, being a new VPN company. First of all, the low number of servers and unlimited bandwidth option for P2P users will strain the resources. Even the money-back guarantee is not exactly confidence inducing, albeit, we can understand their apprehension about users misusing their money-back guarantee.

The customer support channel is severely limited, and together with a high cost of subscription, Hide.me is going to find it hard to rope in the customers, especially when there are high quality VPN service providers that offer affordably priced packages.

Hide.Me Review Conclusion

Hide.me is a great VPN option for free users, as 2GB monthly limit is not going to be a huge problem for users who just require a VPN to encrypt their online communications. However, if Hide.me is to rope in some useful sales numbers, they will certainly have to increase the number of features offered, as well as reduce the costs.

  1. Address hide.io now redirects yo hide.me with no explanation, reference to the prior URL. Is this simply a name change or has the service been hijacked?
