ExpressVPN Review

More and more people are discovering the virtues of ExpressVPN ( Their userbase is growing rapidly, so let’s find out what the fuss about this provider is.

ExpressVPN homepage

ExpressVPN offers unlimited VPN services and unlimited web usage for a price that isn’t really expensive, but certainly higher than the subscription price of other VPN service providers. With over 1,000+ servers in 100 locations across 78 countries, there are a lot of options for switching between different IPs and different countries for their subscribers.

ExpressVPN offers all of their services in a bundled package for a prescribed price. As a result, you get to enjoy the entire range of services without having to pay extra for added features or functions.

There is also a 30-day money back guarantee. You can try out their services during this period, and if you are not satisfied, you can cancel your subscription anytime during the money-back period and you will receive a refund. Unfortunately, there is no free trial.

VPN Application Installation Review & Network Configuration

ExpressVPN offers a software terminal for Windows and Mac that can be installed to access the web anonymously. Installing the platform is quite easy and straightforward. You can change a wide variety of parameters within the platform to switch between servers, change IPs or tweak your connection settings such as choosing a security protocol.

While ExpressVPN offers dedicated VPN platforms for Windows and Mac, the Linux operating system requires manual configuration settings. However, manual network configuration can also be adopted for other operating systems. You can opt for this if you are confident in setting up the VPN connection manually.

Expert VPN users indeed prefer to do this, but it is far easier to use the software installation as this will involve less time. The ExpressVPN platform allows you to automatically bypass your firewall restrictions and lets you connect to the Internet for privacy and viewing blocked content.

ExpressVPN Mobile VPN App

Unlike most VPN competitors, ExpressVPN provides dedicated VPN mobile apps for Android and iOS (for both the iPhone and the iPad). This is by far the most attractive feature for VPN users, as it avoids the hassle of setting up and maintaining a manual VPN connection on a mobile device.

To connect to a VPN using either interface, you will need login parameters and a few other settings, which will be sent to you via email after signing up. As mentioned, there are tutorials on their website to help you, or you can always choose to contact customer support to help you with your VPN client installation and network configuration.

ExpressVPN Technical Specifications

ExpressVPN offers almost the entire range of VPN protocols for desktop as well as mobile platforms. The present set of VPN protocols that are available include OpenVPN, PPTP, L2TP/IPSec and SSTP. This further increases the credibility of ExpressVPN’s VPN services.

ExpressVPN Cost of Subscription

ExpressVPN offers their unlimited VPN services in a single bundled package. This means that the only choice that you would have to make should be the duration of the subscription.

ExpressVPN used to be expensive, charging their customers around $19.95. This was a part of the reason why ExpressVPN found it difficult to find traction among customers during the initial launch days. But they seem to have realized the effects of that price on their customers, and have started offering their services for much less.

Currently, their single month package costs $12.95. This is renewed automatically, and is a good choice for testing out their services. But if you are going for the semi-annual or the annual package, it can cost you $59.95 and $99.95, equating to $9.99 and $8.32 per month respectively. This amounts to a saving of around 23 percent for the semi-annual package and 35 percent for the annual package.

ExpressVPN Pricing

The 30-day money back guarantee is a good option for those who are not sure about the services. You get to enjoy the full range of services for 30 days, and if you are not satisfied, they will pay you back the entire subscription amount. Just make sure that you cancel the subscription before the end of the 30 days period. Coupled with a competitive pricing strategy, ExpressVPN has ticked all the right boxes this time around.

The payment options are the usual deal, and you can make the payment through your credit cards. Visa, MasterCard, American Express and Discover Card are all accepted. For those who prefer online payment processors, PayPal is also an available option. However, increased payment options such as check and bank wire transfers could be more suitable for a global audience.

ExpressVPN Speed, Bandwidth & Reliability

Express VPN Speed Test

Speed tests for ExpressVPN were more or less in line with expectations. We were able to achieve up to 70 percent of the speed available. This figure dropped down to as low as 20 percent for distant servers, but that was expected. Initially, we had trouble with browsing speed due to a low server count, but now, it seems that ExpressVPN has upped its game and installed more servers. The difference is quite visible with considerable increments in browsing speed.

One of the ace features from ExpressVPN is the unlimited bandwidth without any speed restrictions. This is certainly an added bonus for ExpressVPN customers. Not all VPN service providers offer unlimited bandwidth. But the downside is that servers can get clogged up with increased usage (read unlimited downloads) from different users.

We faced such issues but to an extent, the increased server installations at ExpressVPN have enabled the company to handle the increased number of requests. We believe that the situation will improve further with more expansion plans, which are bound to happen at the company.

There are slight reliability issues, and you might experience a drop in connection. In such a case, you will have to switch the server location or the IP. If a server of your choice is unavailable, you can contact customer support for alternatives, and they will be able to reroute you through servers that are relatively free and fast.

ExpressVPN Servers & Server Locations

ExpressVPN has VPN over 1,000+ servers in 100 locations across 78 countries around the globe. The servers are located in the US, UK, Switzerland, Sweden, Spain, Singapore, Portugal, Japan, Poland, Panama, Netherlands, Denmark, Lithuania, Austria, Canada, Czech Republic, Hong Kong, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Luxembourg, and Italy. The list of countries is pretty impressive, and provides a range of options for ExpressVPN subscribers to choose the server location according to their web browsing requirements.

There isn’t an exact figure on the actual number of servers available, but we have found out the number to be more than 200. This is certainly not an impressive number, and the only way forward is to increase the server count. This could certainly help ExpressVPN offer more speed and reliability to their customers, and a few niggling issues that we faced could be minimized. Maybe surveying the competition in this regard will be of help.

Switching between servers and IPs is really easy with the platform, and you are entitled to make as many switches as you want. Unlimited freedom to change the servers and IPs certainly reflects well in favor of ExpressVPN, as most VPN service providers put a cap on the total number of switches allowed per day/week/month. Another point to note is that there aren’t dedicated IP addresses, and neither is there an option for paying for a dedicated IP. This is clearly a minor downside for ExpressVPN.

ExpressVPN Customer Service

You now have the option of contacting customer service through live chat, support ticket or email. The live chat feature now runs 24/7, which is indeed a boon for international subscribers.

While the email etiquette has not been improved drastically since the last time we checked, the on-hand 24 hour live support can certainly get the job done. Don’t be surprised if the email responses from ExpressVPN reach your spam or junk folder. You might want to add their email addresses to your list of contacts to prevent this from happening.

The tutorial page is informative, simple and brief too. They aren’t overly illustrative or extensive, but it can help you setup a VPN connection. If anything goes badly wrong, it will be best to contact the customer support, rather than trying to find the solution on your own.

ExpressVPN Problems & Issues Encountered

We faced a lot of reliability issues before, but things have changed for the better. Now we have been experiencing less downtime and more speed, which is all a result of the new server additions and a complete overhaul of the VPN services offered by ExpressVPN. It can now be safely assumed that ExpressVPN is a major contender in the industry, and has carved out a niche for itself.

However, there are still minor hassles, especially due to downtime and connection drops. We are sure that this is a result of unlimited bandwidth and users vying for resources. The addition of multiple servers will hopefully minimize this issue.

The terminal is a bit complex. You do get quite a lot of features, it’s easy to use only when you comprehend the different functions on offer. Linux users are left out as well, and only manual VPN connection is possible.

ExpressVPN usually keeps a log of its users, and they will log the IP as well as the bandwidth usage. We are led to believe that no user-related information will be stored, and the websites visited by their users won’t be tracked. There haven’t been any instances of user privacy violations yet, so we feel that ExpressVPN can be classified as a trusted provider.

ExpressVPN Discounts & Promos

ExpressVPN offers discounts for their semi-annual and annual packages. The six months package can help you save 23 percent, while a whopping 35 percent discount is available for the yearly package.

ExpressVPN Review Conclusion

The range of services on offer and the revamped VPN server list has made ExpressVPN a major player in the VPN industry. For $8.32 per month subscription price, ExpressVPN isn’t the cheapest, but it is without doubt one of the best VPN service providers with a complete list of features that can help you browse the web anonymously and securely. ExpressVPN also supports unblocking websites and help you to bypass censorship. Due to the unlimited speeds and bandwidth on offer, ExpressVPN is also best suited for online streaming entertainment channels such as Netflix, Hulu, BBC iPlayer, Amazon and more.

My best advice is to give it a try and see for yourself how you like the service. When you sign up, you get a 30-day money back guarantee – this gives you enough time to become familiar with the pros and cons of ExpressVPN.

  1. Nice to see ExpressVPN getting lots of love from torrenters. Privacy is priceless!
use and love ExpressVPN. no bells and whistles, just simple and it works.

  2. i got it for livestream….takes ages to connect to a country..then if you happen to get a connection it lags…a complete waste of time…had it for 1 hour and then cancelled…..waste of time

  3. Their Mac app is superb. Connections are almost always reliable and the network lock feature is a nice bonus. Been using it for about 6 months.

  4. I love Express VPN for my PC. I hate it for my Android. The time-out time for their mobile app is FAR too slow. The time-out usually happens before I can finish a level of my favorite game, and I have to restart the game after MANUALLY reconnecting Express VPN. Ok, so games aren’t super important… I’m often doing something with Google systems, then I receive an email,, and Express VPN times out by the time I finish reading and email, and, you guessed it, I need to go MANUALLY reconnect EVPN after wondering for a moment why nothing is connected.

    SO annoying.

Yes, the bundle of PC/mobile makes sense for billing, but I’d opt for a PC only version and stop paying for the mobile access if that was available.

  5. This company stole $99.95 USD from me without my consent through Paypal for a service I haven’t used in 2 years. Paypal sided with them and put in the transaction anyway despite my contacting ExpressVPN to cancel my account. ExpressVPN promised to refund me the money and said they did, but they didn’t. So I made a complaint to Paypal again and I have to keep contacting them and receive more lies and excuses from them not to pay me back because I “put in another dispute”. I have to take legal action. AVOID!

  6. Expensive, but has all the bells and whistles of the best VPNs. The only thing missing is a kill switch. There have recently been a number of interruptions to the service. A kill switch would have kept anonymity.

  7. Here’s my experiences using ExpressVPN for the last few months.

I’m using this ExpressVPN to bypass censorships, including accessing blocked sites and Occasionally, it’s hard to connect, but by waiting a bit longer or switching services, it’s always worked out. It’s fairly good considering lots of other VPN services didn’t even work once for where I am when it’s a hard time. I used it for months without having any big problems.

It worked for my DD-WRT router, so I can setup two Wi-Fi access points, one for VPN, one for direct connection, it’s worked good. Also when on the go, there’s an official Android app available, the app updated often for what I saw, and included a Gadget, so you can turn it on or off handy.

Hulu is blocking IP ranges, but also blocking VPN services, and last I checked, ExpressVPN is one of them. But lucky, there’s a free tool called “Hola!”. Turn on ExpressVPN, then turn on Hola for, it’s worked for me, and the speed is good here. You can enable Hola only for sites you choose, and can edit this list anytime. Besides using Hola, you can of course using a smart DNS service, like StrongDNS, to access Hulu. (If you live in a place where Hola is not blocked, you can using Hola only to access Hulu. And if you living in a place don’t have heavy Internet censorship, you can use StrongDNS only to access Hulu and other geo limited streaming services.)

  8. I’m on a free one day trial and disappointed in the speed. My Moto Android phone has download speed of 40.0 Mbps, 11.99 Mbps upload. When Express VPN was in automatic mode, I got just 6.4 for download speed, upload was actually faster at 10.99. I was using Chicago, Toronto and Washington D.C. I was able to get a slight increase in speed by manually configuring to use TCP. Best was 8.33 dwn, 11.64 upload. Welcome any help

  9. I’m here in China and have been having problems with all the different VPNs I use. China is just a difficult place from which to base any sort of criticism about a service.

I had my own small problems with ExpressVPN but overall it worked well.

There are plenty of other options out there but ExpressVPN offers great ease-of-use and beautiful design on top of a very good service.

  10. I don’t know about other countries, but if you’re in China, I’d stay away from Express VPN. Despite their claims that they’re one of the most reliable providers for China, I’ve found them mostly useless. I can’t connect to UDP or TCP at all and the other protocols only work occasionally and the connection is usually slow and soon disconnects altogether.

I’ve spent hours chatting with their customer support, but they just ran me through the standard procedures and once those were exhausted, they had nothing else to offer.

    1. Hey, I had the EXACT same problem with UDP and TCP (couldn’t connect at all) but it was fixed when I updated my computer’s DNS settings to Google’s and OpenVPN’s. Did you do that?

China (I think??) blocks L2TP and PPTP, so I’m actually surprised you’re able to connect, even sporadically. I can’t at all with those protocols, even though I could about 9 months ago.

  11. I use Express VPN and I’m very impressed and very.happy with the service they provide, I’m upgrading to a 6 month service plan. Express VPN is a winner!

  12. I don’t agree that expressvpn is as good a value as you purport it to be. During the last 6 months there has been a drop in overseas servers, most notably argentina.  The remaining servers on the list are at a very slow crawl.  Only 2 Canada servers and only one in Australia.  There is an abundance of USA servers, however; so if that’s what you want, then you have it.

  13. Thanks for the great review. I got the app from and I am very happy with their speeds and privacy standards.
