Anonymizer Universal Review

Anonymizer is one of the oldest VPN service providers in the industry, having been around since 1998. However, they are marketed more as an online security company rather than a VPN service provider, primarily because they started during the time when VPN services were still not popular, and also because they want to appeal to a broader audience. Here’s a short review on Anonymizer Universal to better understand what’s being offered.

Speed Test

During our testing, anonymizer gave us decent speeds. The only slowdown encountered was understandable since all VPNs will slow your connection speeds a bit due to the encryption.

Pricing Plans

Anonymizer only has two packages, the first is their Standard VPN service, dubbed Anonymizer Universal Internet Privacy Service, which is worth $80 a year, the second is an anonymous email service, which is only worth $20 a year. If you sign up using our link, you can avail of their 14 day free trial.

Client Setup and Usage

Anonymizer is very easy to use. You just need to download the installer for their client and run it. They have clients for the PC and Mac, and they also have an iPhone app under development.

Server Locations

Anonymizers servers are all located within the US. They have a roster of IP addresses that are all US based, which is assigned to users dynamically (everytime you connect, you will be assigned a random IP address from their pool)

Protocols Supported

Anonymizer is limited to Layer 2 Transfer Protocol, which should be enough as it provides 256 bit encryption. L2TP/IPsec takes two forms of security, first is proof against tampering (authenticity) and the second is protection against monitoring and tracking (privacy). This two-pronged security measure is done by Ipsec, which is a lot more secure than SSL, especially when used in VPNs.

Errors Encountered

We didn’t encounter any problems with Anonymizer’s client, nor their service. But for users who do encounter problems, even if its on their end, will be able to get help easily from Anonymizer’s customer support. Anonymizer provides extensive aftermarket support through email, phone, and an comprehensive knowledge base.

Anonymizer Universal Review Conclusion

Anonymizer has been around for 15 years, and their experience certainly adds to their credibility. They have been in the business for a long time and have adapted to changes much better than their other competitors.

You have to keep in mind, though, that Anonymizer is not the VPN of choice if you want a lot of extra features. They currently only have 1 VPN protocol and 1 country, but their lack of extra features means that they were able to concentrate in improving what they have. If you want a bit more variety, you should try browsing our list of Top VPN service providers, but if you like what Anonymizer is offering, you should take advantage of their 1 week free trial by signing up using our link.

  1. The AU service is extremely easy to use, and I’ve found it reliable. However, the only tech support available is email — no phone support. And that sucks big time.

  2. We have had Anonymizer Universal for several months and finally gave up, switched to another.

A.U. crashed on us dozens of times a day! Extremely SLOW and terrible customer service! One time, logging in failed for most of a day, so I contacted customer service via Twitter….5 days later they replied “Just keep trying”. USELESS!! Complete waste of money!!

    1. I tried their two week trial a year ago. Websites took only slightly longer to load. It had no effect on streaming at all. I still had the same great speeds on Youtube and Hulu.

    2. I have been a subscriber of Anonymizer for about 10 years. I haven’t experienced any of the problems that you have. Maybe it’s your operating system. If you want to contact customer service, you should do it through THEIR WEBSITE. They have a contact link. I’ve always received quick and accurate replies.
