Who is CyberGhost VPN? How to install it?

CyberGhost is a Virtual Private Network provider, that is to say a tool or software that allows you to protect your devices when you connect to the Internet. It gives you the possibility to hide your identity, your IP address, but also the activities you do online. More than a VPN, it also offers a series of features to be safe on the internet.

The VPN market is a very active one (see our VPN comparison) and the many players present are trying to make a place for themselves among the big guys. And among the big players, there is CyberGhost VPN. It deserves to be in the top 3, with a flawless and reassuring service. Below, we’ll give you all the information you need to know and our own review of CyberGhost, tested in 2022.

First of all, you should know that this is a publisher founded in 2011 in Bucharest, Romania. It quickly became one of the pioneers by offering a very good quality application, while remaining affordable. Over the years, the features have been developed and the number of servers has largely increased, allowing the provider to adapt to the needs of consumers.

The buyout by the Kape Group in 2017 gave a boost to the company, which has since established itself among the best VPN providers on the market.

Installation & Configuration

A good VPN client

Cyberghost VPN client is easy to use, modern and offers all the features you need to protect yourself online!

Cyberghost is simple enough for the average user but also offers more advanced settings for verteran users!

Find how to install it

How to install the Cyberghost application?

Before we get into the technical details, let’s focus on the download and installation process of the provider. In order to have a global vision to make this opinion on CyberGhost VPN, we took care to test the application on several devices. We tested it on iPhone, but also on Mac and iPad.

Of course, if you are on Windows or Android, it will work just as well. There’s no real difference except that you’ll have to go to Google Play and not the App Store to download the app on mobile, tablet or Smart TV. In any case, the VPN is available on all operating systems (we’ll get to that below).

Whether you’re an expert or a novice, you’ll have no problem downloading the file from the provider’s website, opening it and going through the various steps to complete the installation on your computer. No prior settings are required.

When it is finished, the software will appear on your desktop in your menu bar. When you first open the application, you will be asked for your CyberGhost credentials (username and password).

How to use the VPN?

If some VPNs are complex to use, this is not the case of the one offered by CyberGhost VPN, in our opinion, especially since the application has been updated recently which makes it even easier to use.

Let’s start by reminding you in which contexts you can use a VPN:

  • To unblock content blocked abroad: for example, streaming channels like Netflix but also foreign TV channels
  • To bypass censorship in the countries concerned, such as Russia, China and some Middle Eastern countries
  • To download or watch streaming content safely without taking risks
  • To surf anonymously on the Internet no matter what your activities are
  • To change or hide your IP and geographical location

To make an opinion about CyberGhost VPN, we used the software in several circumstances and on different devices. However, there is no real difference in the way it works between operating systems, except for the positioning of certain buttons. Overall, everything is pretty much the same. The application is fluid, simple and stable, which gives a real sense of security.

To activate CyberGhost, you’ll just have to click on the activation button. This will connect you to the best available server by default. This is calculated based on your location, but also on the available servers nearby and their degree of saturation. Once connected, the application runs in the background on your device. You don’t have to worry about it anymore.

If you want to choose a server located in a specific country, all you have to do is choose a location from the list available. For your information, CyberGhost is currently present in over 90 countries!

Although we will come back to this in a dedicated paragraph of this CyberGhost review, it is important to know that in addition to its standard servers, the publisher also makes other specific ones available to its users.

Depending on your online activity (streaming or downloading), you will find 100% optimized dedicated servers. For example, you will find one with the name Netflix US or Prime Video. You won’t find this option with its big rival, ExpressVPN, which doesn’t distinguish the type of activity. This is a very good point.

Performances

Average speeds

Cyberghost VPN is not the fastest VPN we have recently tested. It’s speeds using the Wireguard protocol are average but the client works well when used for streaming and torrenting.

Test the speeds of this VPN

Another essential point in our CyberGhost review: speed. When you go through an intermediate server (that’s the principle of a VPN), it must be of good quality so as not to degrade your connection speed.

We conducted speed tests with CyberGhost to see how the provider compared to its competitors and if it could be counted among the fastest VPNs. Since a picture is worth a thousand words, check out the results below.

Speed without VPN

To start with, we first performed a speed test without VPN connection to get an idea of our basic connection and to be able to draw the right conclusions. Below, the data obtained without any VPN protection:

Nothing to report, our connection is good.

Throughput via a CyberGhost US server

Now we repeat the operation by connecting to a server in the US. Here are the results:

As we can see, there was a decrease in upload and download speed and an increase in latency (ping) from 9 to 32 ms. However, there is no need to be alarmed as this is still more than enough to browse the web, download or stream HD content. The performance remains more than satisfactory for now.

Speed via a CyberGhost UK server

What if we choose a server much further away, for example in the United Kingdom? Fans of sports streaming and UK channels should be happy: it will always be possible with this VPN because the results are good.

Of course, there is a drop, but this is quite normal. This is due to the geographical distance. This is also the case with other very premium players.

With these results, CyberGhost is perfectly positioned in the average of its competitors. So this is a good point of this review, even if you can find better speeds and overall performances with other providers, like NordVPN and ExpressVPN.

Testing CyberGhost VPN for streaming

Streaming is an activity that has seen a big increase lately with the rise of SVoD platforms like Netflix. However, due to licensing and broadcasting rights issues, Netflix content varies from country to country. In our CyberGhost VPN review, it’s very important to know if this provider can provide quality streaming.

The VPN is a very good way to bypass this national partitioning of content. Indeed, it allows you to hide your real location and connect to a server in the country of your choice to access an IP located in that same country. If you have a Netflix account, the VPN can be useful for :

  • access your content wherever you are, even from abroad by connecting to a French server
  • unlock new movies and TV series available on Netflix’s foreign catalogs
Must Read  SurfsharkVPN review

To make this opinion on CyberGhost, we have of course tested the VPN on these different features. On the one hand, because some software, having been blacklisted by Netflix, no longer allow to unblock the platform. On the other hand, because you need a sufficient speed for the loading (in HD if you please) to be done quickly and the playback to be done without interruption.

So we made several tests, and all our tests of CyberGhost were positive. Access was immediate and so was the video launch. If you’re a streaming fan, this VPN is probably for you. Thanks to its streaming-specific servers, CyberGhost also works great with Amazon Prime Video, Hulu, Disney+ and even for OCS.

In addition to streaming platforms, CyberGhost also manages to unblock TV channels from all over the world including foreign programs and free sports channels.

Note also that it works the same way for P2P torrent downloads. We have also done the tests, and CyberGhost has no flaws in this area. You will be able to download without taking any risks (and without having to compromise on the quality or speed of the download).

Security

A VPN company with a strong commitment for security

CyberGhost offers excellent privacy protection. Like any log-free VPN that respects its users, it keeps no logs of your online activities and is located in Romania, where data retention laws are friendly. The provider also accepts Bitcoin crypto-currency as payment for subscriptions, adding an extra layer of privacy.

Secure your online activity now

Choosing a VPN means choosing a provider that is reliable, serious and secure. It is therefore essential to sift through this criterion to have a complete opinion on CyberGhost.

Security

Security is essential when it comes to VPN. Indeed, who would want a software that would not guarantee an optimal security, when it is precisely the goal of a Virtual Private Network?

As far as CyberGhost is concerned, the notions of cybersecurity and respect for the anonymity of Internet users are at the heart of the company’s values. To ensure your protection at all times, CyberGhost applies AES-256 encryption on the incoming and outgoing traffic of your device to make all your data and activities unreadable to others. But in order to make a more accurate opinion about CyberGhost, we also passed tests via the ipleak site capable of detecting possible leaks.

ip-leak-test-nordvpn

As you can see from the screenshots, the IP address varies depending on whether the VPN is activated or not. CyberGhost VPN correctly masks our personal IP address and physical location. Moreover, there are no DNS leaks on the horizon which is also a very good sign.

In terms of your privacy security, there is nothing to say. So it’s a big yes for this provider that proves once again that it can be trusted.

Moreover, CyberGhost VPN has a built-in Kill Switch feature by default. This feature automatically blocks your web traffic in case the VPN protection is not effective, even for a few seconds. This ensures that you never let any information about your real IP address through.

Cyberghost privacy policy

You may be wondering if the company keeps your online activities and connection logs – also known as logs. Good news, they don’t.

CyberGhost is one of the no-log VPN providers that do not keep any data from users. There’s a reason the provider is based in Romania. There, data retention laws are much less strict than in other European countries. Moreover, this country does not belong to any interstate intelligence agreement (14 Eyes).

In its privacy policy on its official website, the provider clearly states that neither your browsing history, visited sites, search preferences, originating IP, nor the time or duration of your connections are kept. It’s a pity that no security audit can confirm this no-log policy.

One very interesting thing we wanted to mention in this CyberGhost review is that the provider publishes a transparency report every 3 months in which it exposes the number of complaints received from governments, agencies and third-party services. Since CyberGhost does not collect any data, it cannot pass anything on. This builds trust with users, and we think it’s a great thing to be so transparent.

Our readers need to know that Cyberghost is part of the Kape Technologies group which has be linked to some shady things in the past!

Does the censorship bypass work?

Let’s continue this CyberGhost review with the digital censorship bypass. If you’re planning on traveling to a country where censorship doesn’t allow access to your favorite programs and sites, CyberGhost reviews are sometimes a bit mixed.

This is especially the case in China or Turkey, where feedback from our friends and family and the community said that the VPN connection was not effective for accessing pages like Facebook or Gmail.

That said, aside from these exceptions, it seems that VPN works in every other country in the world. Whether you’re in Russia, the United Arab Emirates or anywhere else, it’s possible to activate CyberGhost VPN without worry. The throughput is of very good quality.

In addition to the censorship put in place by governments, there are also some websites that are geo-blocked. In this case, a VPN like CyberGhost will be able to help you because it changes your geographical position and assigns you another one virtually.

Although CyberGhost does not surpass the leader ExpressVPN in this area, it still offers very good results and manages to unblock many geo-restricted sites. If you can’t get around the blocking on the first try, don’t hesitate to try again by changing your server.

Server network and country coverage

The network of countries and the number of servers of a VPN provider is an essential element to take into account, especially when you want to stream (but not only).

A high number of servers means that you will never face server saturation. A large country coverage means that you will not have difficulties to find a server in the country you are looking for.

To make your own opinion about CyberGhost, here are the numbers about the provider:

  • over 9,000 remote servers
  • presence in 90 countries
  • 114 different locations

If you’re having trouble wrapping your head around this, you should know that these statistics are well above the average of other Virtual Private Network providers. It is even the largest network at the time of writing this CyberGhost VPN review.

Fortunately, to make it easier for you to find your way around all its servers, CyberGhost offers an automated connection by country. So, just click on the territory of your choice in the list and the VPN will select the most suitable server for you at the moment.

User Experience

User experience is good overall. The Cyberghost client offers a lot of controls on your settings and will please both beginner as well as more advanced users!

The interface of the VPN client is modern and offers a slick design.

Subscription Cost

Cyberghost offers a monthly subscription cost that now stands at around $12.99 per month. That is not what one would like to call cheap, but it is certainly in the average price bracket for this market.

There are discounts for the bulk subscription packages. A 6 months package will cost you around $6,99 per month while a 2 year plan will cost you around $2,03 per month. It makes sense to opt for the 2 year plan, as at that price, Cyberghost certainly makes a lot of sense, especially for those who are looking to have access to a wide range of locations and IP addresses.

Customer Support

Before concluding this review and sharing our opinion on CyberGhost, it is important to look at the customer support offered by the provider.

First of all, it’s great to see that the VPN has developed a customer service in French, English and German. Good news for users who are not bilingual. You will be able to talk to a specialist in your language and express your problem more clearly. This is not the case with all competitors, many of whom limit themselves to English.

You also benefit from several different points of contact:

  • Online chat available day and night. The advisors are responsive, which makes it possible to move forward and unblock the problem quickly
  • Assistance available by e-mail or by filling out a contact form
  • A FAQ page in case the question you are asking is not specific but a regular question from consumers. It is convenient because it allows you to get the answers to your questions directly without waiting
  • Various user guides, starting with download and installation, but also help to set up features and find the servers that best fit your business
Must Read  AtlasVPN Review: Is This Cheap VPN Worth It?

In terms of availability, good news too: support is available in English 24/7.

In any case, whatever the time, you will find someone to accompany you and help you. The company understands the importance of customer support.

Additionnal features

Before we conclude this CyberGhost VPN review, here is some additional information that might be useful to you.

Seven simultaneous connections

The number of simultaneous connections offered by the provider is very interesting as it is one of the most generous offers in this regard. For the purchase of a subscription, you will be able to protect no less than 7 different devices in parallel.

As we’ve already seen in this CyberGhost review, the prices offered are already very attractive. But if you calculate the price per device, it’s even cheaper.

A multi-support compatibility

CyberGhost VPN is a multi-support application compatible on all major OS. During our tests on different operating systems, we were able to see that this was indeed the case. Whether it’s on macOS, iOS, Windows, Android or Linux, you’ll be able to not only install, but also use the VPN without ever encountering any difficulties.

In addition to installing on computers and mobiles, you can also use CyberGhost on your Fire TV Stick connected box and Android Smart TV. Recently, the application is also available on compatible routers.

If you ever feel that your device does not support Virtual Private Network well or only partially works, do not hesitate to contact customer support for a detailed analysis of your connection.

Built-in privacy settings

An important point with the CyberGhost application is that it has many features that not all competitors offer. These privacy settings are designed to increase your anonymity and protection online.

To take advantage of these settings, all you have to do is activate the Block Content button. The device will then block advertisements, which will allow you to say goodbye to Adblocks, malware and tracking for good, so you can avoid online tracking.

All in all, this all-in-one tool allows you to protect yourself from the numerous scams present on the web. It also avoids the need to install other dedicated programs, which is very practical.

It’s up to you to activate this feature or not. In any case, if you want to enjoy 360-degree protection, this is ideal.

Split Tunneling on Android

CyberGhost offers Split Tunneling on Android. This feature allows you to choose which applications need to be protected by the VPN’s encrypted tunnel and which do not and can be accessed through the main connection.

This option is activated from the application settings. You can access it by clicking on the cogwheel at the top right of the interface. Then, click on App Split Tunnel and manually select the applications you do not want to transit through the VPN connection.

This option is interesting in several circumstances. For example, if you want to continue accessing your banking application (from your main connection) while watching foreign content on a streaming platform (with the VPN connection).

Note that CyberGhost will encrypt the traffic of all your applications by default. If you do not change the Split Tunneling settings, all your applications will be protected.

Dedicated IP option

For users who want to enjoy a clean IP address that can only be accessed by them, CyberGhost offers a static and anonymous dedicated IP. You can choose from the following locations: Canada, United States, Germany, France, United Kingdom, Australia, Singapore and Netherlands. The cost of this additional option is set at €5 per month. Now this is the rate if you take one for 1 month only.

The longer you commit, the lower the monthly price of your dedicated IP address will be.

The dedicated IP address is convenient in some cases, especially if you want to control your digital reputation and get rid of Captcha. It also considerably limits the risk of being blacklisted. Thus, you are almost sure to have access to all services (banking, streaming, e-commerce, etc) without any problem.

Supported VPN protocols

We haven’t talked about it so far in this CyberGhost review. However, the choice of VPN protocols available is important.

Which protocols can be used through the CyberGhost VPN application? There are three of them: OpenVPN, IKEv2, WireGuard.

Although the choice is not huge, we find there the three protocols of reference in the field. So you can be sure that you will be in the best conditions.

A little advice: use the WireGuard protocol whenever possible. It is indeed the most efficient of the three.

Now, as we mentioned earlier in our review, by using the smart choice option (available in the application settings), CyberGhost will automatically choose the protocol that will offer you the best performance. This is ideal if you don’t want to bother changing manually.

If our review of CyberGhost is positive, it’s simply because the provider has developed real expertise in cybersecurity over the years. Over time, the interface has become simpler and features have been added until we have a solid tool that is now considered to offer a good value for money on the market.

We can therefore only advise you to choose this provider if your main argument is the subscription price and simplicity. It remains a very premium player that offers a complete cybersecurity suite accessible to all. No other provider offers such a network of servers, nor such know-how in terms of web privacy.

If you are looking for faster speeds or for a VPN that works in China, it is best to look elsewhere in our opinon!

F.A.Q

Do you have any questions regarding NordVPN? We might have the answer for you:

CyberGhost does offer a free VPN solution through its extensions for Chrome and Firefox browsers. Note, however, that the features and number of servers are limited compared to the paid service. The provider also offers a 14-day money back guarantee with the monthly subscription and 45 days for subscriptions from 1 to 3 years. This solution has the advantage of being able to use all the features of the VPN without restriction, but it requires registering a payment method and remembering to request a refund before the end of the trial period.

The provider has a high quality technical support available 24/7 via a classic live chat or a ticket system. It is also possible to reach the service by email ([email protected]) or by filling in the contact form on its website. CyberGhost customer support has the advantage of being available in four languages: French, German, English and Romanian.

Bypassing the geographical restrictions of streaming platforms is one of the main promises of VPN services. With over 7,700 servers in 91 countries, CyberGhost allows access to most TV and streaming services on the planet without any limitations. Whether via its Windows and Mac clients, mobile or other, the VPN offers a wide choice of servers specifically optimized to unblock the most popular geo-blocked streaming services in one click: Netflix/Hulu/Prime Video/Disney+/YouTube US,/Netflix, BBC Player/Netflix/Prime Video UK, etc.

Due to its location in Romania, CyberGhost benefits from one of the most advantageous legislations for a VPN in terms of privacy protection. Unlike other EU countries, the country has not adopted the directive requiring companies to keep data on their customers. CyberGhost can therefore apply a true “zero log” policy and guarantee a high level of confidentiality.

CyberGhost has the merit of not making it difficult for users to cancel their subscription. To cancel your subscription, simply go to the administration interface of your account and click on the “My subscriptions” tab. All you have to do is deactivate the “Automatic Renewal” option and you’re done! Please note that even if you cancel your subscription, it will not end until it has expired.
