Google has updated its terms of service to alert users that the company scans your Gmail messages to tailor advertising for you. The practice has long been considered to be in action but the terms update puts it in writing.
The terms now read:
“Our automated systems analyze your content (including emails) to provide you personally relevant product features, such as customized search results, tailored advertising, and spam and malware detection”
The updates to the policy come after a California judge stated that the policy does not make it explicitly clear that Google checks its users’ emails “for the purposes of creating user profiles or providing targeted advertising.”
However Google has not said that it has updated the policy as a direct response and has not offered a comment.
Google says that anyone who signed up for their services has agreed to the services when you tick that little box and hit continue.
